Why is it so special? Byron Bay had a whaling station right on the Main Beach where the locals would stand on the wharf and watch humpback whales being brought in to slaughter for their oil and blubber. Later the whaling station was turned into a meat works and eventually closed altogether.

We have spent 10 days on the West Coast, then 10 other days on the North Shore. Our two boys came along, Lockie 5y. We got very lucky to hire a great babysitter who lives in Makaha, where we stayed. The kids enjoyed playing under the trees and making friends on the beach, while we were tandem surfing the iconic wave.
