I’d say it is best to either use it for WiFi or your Router so you don’t overlap addresses but I’m sure you could use both if you wanted. The backups will happen automatically – Is it then just a device which backups her stuff in the background with almost no interaction? It might not work all that well with iTunes integration unless she puts her library on it but she can certainly “copy” the iTunes files there and just double click them on the share to play them with a player software.
